Singing Unsung Stories: From Disinterest to Strange Taste

Disinterested attention is an important component of a decolonial feminist aesthetics. However, it needs support from what I call strange taste to do its critical and constructive work and to shape forms of aesthetic relationality. This minicourse lays out this view and investigates its implications. Our topics will include: the notion of disinterest; taste, both strange and regular; telling untold stories; the lettered city (Ángel Rama); eighteenth-century vs. twentieth- and twenty-first-century uses of disinterest (e.g., Hume, Kant, Adorno). The argument will engage short stories by Julio Cortázar and Clarice Lispector’s novella The Hour of the Star and may consider several visual images (film, performance, installation).
